Have you ever heard of a guy named Ronald Wayne? Not Bruce Wayne…batman…but Ronald Wayne. I had never heard of him before this week or if I had it didn’t ring a bell.
In the early 1970s, Ronald was approached by two ambitious entrepreneurs with an idea that could change the world. These two men wanted to start a technology company and asked Wayne to be their third partner. They offered him a 10% stake in their new business.
But Wayne hesitated. He was older than the other two guys, and he feared the financial risk. He had seen startups fail before, and he didn’t want to put himself in a difficult position. After just 12 days, overwhelmed by fear, he sold his shares back for a mere $800.
Well the two entrepreneurs’ names were Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. And the company they started is of course called Apple.
Today, if Wayne had held onto his shares, they would be worth over $200 billion.
Wayne had a chance to be part of something groundbreaking, something bigger than himself. But fear held him back.
How often does fear do the same thing to us?
Many of us want to be part of something big. We long for purpose, for impact, for a movement that changes lives. And yet, when the opportunity comes, fear holds us back.
- Fear of failure
- Fear of loss
- Fear of not having enough
Fear. It often holds us back from the great things God wants to do in and through our lives.
This Sunday we are continuing our series called Ignite where we are sharing our vision for the next 2 years: to be a vibrant Christian movement in the heart of our community igniting hope and meaningful change for new generations.
As with any vision, in order to accomplish it we will need boldness, even in the face of fear. This Sunday we will talk about how to overcome some of those fears through generosity. And I will be sharing some details around our next two areas of emphasis in our vision.
As a reminder, you won’t want to miss our Town Hall this coming Tuesday, February 25 at 7pm where we will be sharing more details about our vision and strategic plan.
I hope to see you on Sunday!
Peace,
Matt
